I am about as curmudgeonly as Lewis Black (could be the perpetual PMS) and so in honor of Earth Day, here is his take on the holiday from 2007.

You can tell I can’t stand celebrity endorsement either. But here is what this Jane Schmo did for this day (and every day).

  •
    • Use Flourescent bulbs everywhere and got rid of the dimmers. (I am not the romantic type) (less electricity)
    • Use cold water for my laundry (less oil consumption)
    • Use only vinegar, salt, and baking soda as household cleaners…sometimes lemons, too. (less to no harsh chemicals)
    • Freecycle (Less landfill, less gas to buy, no money to spend on usable stuff)
    • Keep a small veggie garden and grow organically. (no oil to spend on trucking veggies out of state and country)
    • Buy local produce and products (keeps money in your state)
    • Get off the junk mail lists (keeps money in your wallet and save a few trees)
    • Recycle to the point I have one bag of garbage a week (and we are a family of four)
    • For those strong of stomach…’If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down’. (You save on average 6 – 7 gallons of water if you cut back on the flushing, unless you use one of those 1.5 gallon tanks [kudos!])
    • Walk or use a bicycle to go into town to run your errands. (No gas and your heart will thank you for it)
    • Compost (no need for fertilizer)
    • Cloth shopping bags or rucksacks (no waste on paper or using plastic)
    • Use the library instead of buying a book (less gas and paper usage)
    • View/rent Netflix online instead of going to first run movies (no need for gas)
    • Telecommute or run your business out of your house (no gas required)
    • Read the newspaper online
    • Cook from scratch

Still coming up with new ideas.  See you next year.
